Workforce innovation opportunity act (WIOA)

What is WIOA? A Comprehensive Guide

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a bipartisan federal law that was signed into effect on July 22, 2014. WIOA replaces the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) and was written to improve the nation’s workforce development system. The legislation is designed to help all Americans, including dislocated workers, individuals who are out of work, veterans, and young people who are not in school or employed, gain access to employment, education, training, and certification.

  

What is the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act?

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a law that was enacted in 2014 that provides funding for workforce development programs. The goal of WIOA is to provide opportunities for employment, education, training, and support services to all job seekers, including individuals with disabilities. WIOA also requires that states and localities work together to create a coordinated system of services and programs.


Who is eligible for services?

WIOA programs are available to eligible individuals who are seeking employment or who are underemployed.

To be eligible for WIOA services, individuals must:

-Be at least 18 years old, or

-Be a dislocated worker, or

-Be a young adult between the ages of 14 and 21
